OG usernames: what the term means and what it costs
What qualifies a handle as OG, why the label commands a premium, and how to check that what you are being sold actually is one.

"OG" gets applied loosely enough that buyers often pay a premium without a clear idea of what they are paying for. It is worth defining precisely, because the definition determines whether the premium is justified.
What OG actually means
In this market, OG describes a handle that is a clean, single, common word or a very short string — the kind claimed in a platform's earliest days, before naming conventions filled in with underscores, numbers and suffixes.
Typical characteristics:
- One word, no separators, no numbers.
- A common noun, name or concept rather than an invented string.
- Short — usually under six characters, often far shorter.
- Registered early, when the good names were still unclaimed.
@money, @drift and @y are OG. @money_official and @drift2024 are not, regardless of when they were registered.
Why the premium exists
Two reasons, and they compound.
First, an OG handle looks like it belongs to the primary account. Users read a clean single word as authoritative and a suffixed variant as secondary, whether or not that is true. That perception is the product.
Second, they cannot be manufactured. New platforms create new supply; existing platforms do not. Every OG handle in circulation was claimed once, and the only way one becomes available is if its holder sells.
Where the term gets stretched
Sellers sometimes apply OG to any old account, or to any handle they consider desirable. Account age alone does not make a handle OG — a ten-year-old account called @jsmith_1987 is old, not OG. If the handle is not a clean single word or a very short string, the label is decoration.
What to verify before paying an OG premium
- That the handle itself is genuinely clean — no separators, no digits, no padding.
- That control can be demonstrated live rather than asserted.
- That any account history being sold alongside it is real and matters to you.
- That the transfer method will survive platform scrutiny.
If you are buying the handle rather than the audience, account age and follower count are not what you are paying for. Do not let them be used to justify the price.
Frequently asked questions
Does an OG handle come with the original account?
It depends on the deal structure. Some sales transfer the account and its history; others free the handle for the buyer to claim on their own account. These are meaningfully different products — agree which one you are buying in writing.
Is an OG username worth more than a three-letter one?
They are different axes. A three-letter handle is scarce; an OG word is meaningful. A common OG word will often outprice an awkward three-letter string, and a recognised three-letter code will outprice an obscure OG word. Compare on demand, not on label.
Can new OG handles appear?
Only on new platforms. On established ones the supply is fixed and shrinking in practice, because handles held by large accounts effectively never return to market.
